Getting started with Psychotherapy

Beginning psychotherapy can feel like a significant step. It starts with your first contact – a simple conversation that helps us explore what brings you to therapy and what you hope to gain from it. You are welcome to call or email me to arrange an initial meeting or to ask any questions you may have. I aim to respond to all enquiries as promptly as possible.

The First Meeting

Our initial meeting will offer an opportunity to talk about your reasons for seeking psychotherapy and to consider what it might be like for us to work together. Finding the right therapeutic match is central to the success of the process. This session is designed to give you space to speak freely, without commitment, and to see whether the setting feels right for you.
In some cases, it may be helpful to arrange a second meeting to explore things further before deciding how to proceed. If I feel that a different form of support might be more appropriate, I will always advise you of this and, where possible, make a suitable recommendation.

FAQs

The duration of therapy is open-ended and unfolds according to the needs of the analytic process. Some patients work over an extended period as unconscious patterns, memories, and meanings gradually come into view. The pace and length of the work are not predetermined; we will periodically review the process together and allow the therapy to develop in its own time.

The first session is a gentle introduction. We talk about what brings you to therapy, any goals you may have, and how we might work together. It’s also an opportunity for you to ask questions and get a sense of whether the approach feels comfortable for you.

That’s completely okay. You don’t need to prepare anything. You can share as much or as little as you feel ready to. The space is supportive and judgment-free, and we will move at a pace that feels safe for you.

Yes. Everything you share in therapy is kept confidential. The only exceptions are rare situations where there is a serious risk of harm to you or someone else, in which case I am legally required to act. If those circumstances ever arise, we would discuss it together.

Yes, online sessions are available for those who prefer them or find them more convenient. They follow the same structure and level of support as in-person sessions.

There is a simple agreement outlining how we work together, including confidentiality, session length, fees, and cancellation terms. It helps ensure clarity and a shared understanding from the beginning.

Fees are discussed on an individual basis once you get in touch. Standard sessions range from £60 to £75, depending on your circumstances.
There is a £50 for an initial in-person consultation.  I also offer a limited number of reduced-cost spaces for individuals on a low income.
